Qoyllur Rit'i - June

The Star Snow Festivity combines Christian and Andean beliefs. Each year, entire families make a pilgrimage to the snowy mountain of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit'i. An image is carried in procession from His chapel at Mawallani to His sanctuary at Sinakara.
Days after, a second procession carries a statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the sanctuary to an uphill grotto. The Lord is taken to visit the Virgin and back. Dance troupes take turns to perform in the shrine.
During this celebration, drinking alcohol or having sexual contact is not allowed, a common practice during Andean festivities. At dawn on the third day, ukukus -considered the only capable of dealing with the condemned, said to inhabit the snowfields- climb the glaciers carrying crosses to set the on the top. They have to bring back blocks of the ice, believed to have medicinal qualities.
