Inti Raymi - June 24th

Peru upholds a variety of festivals and celebrations. The Inti Raymi, is the Peruvian Festival of the Sun and it is the most important folkloric expression of Cusco. It consists of a recreation of Inca celebrations from centuries ago.
Inti Raymi starts at 8 AM at the Plaza de Armas of Cusco in front of the Coricancha. The rainbow Inti Raymi flag is raised while mass takes place in the cathedral. Then the Sapa Inca addresses the Sun (in Quechua) and thanks him for all his blessings. Afterward the Inca is carried on a throne and taken to the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman in procession for the main ceremony.
Once there, the Sapa Inca performs rituals and offerings to thank the Sun for his generosity. This is one of the biggest festivals of the Americas.
